The official Polish currency is called "Zloty", further divided into hundred subunits termed "grosz". It is one of the most widely recognized English currencies. 1949 was when Poland coins of various denominations were issued, including 1, 2, 5, 20, 20, and 50 grosz and 1 zloty coins. As the name of the State was changed in 1952, from "Republic of Poland" to "People's Republic of Poland", the coins minted before this period had the last name engraved on them.
