History of Stamp Collection

The Receiver General of Stamp Due in Ireland, John Bourke, is the first person to collect stamps. In 1774, he assembled all the revenue stamps in a book that ranged from six pounds to half a penny. The hand-stamped charge marks used with them were also included in this book. The Royal Irish Academy has preserved the General’s collection to date.

Penny Black was the name of the first postage stamp produced by Britain in 1840, featuring a portrait of Queen Victoria.
