US dollars' coins held the value of one dollar and were first minted and circulated in 1794 with silver, gold, and base metal options. Although gold coins are no longer minted, Presidential Dollar Coins, Sacagawea, and the American Innovation dollars are known as gold coins due to their color.
To save the printing cost of US dollars' bills, various programs were introduced, including the Presidential $1 Coin Program that has failed because most of the citizens prefer to use the bills instead of the coins. The citizens' preference led to the cancellation of production of the dollar coins in 2011 for general circulation and are only minted for collection purposes.
