Eisenhower Dollars
In 1971, the U.S. Mint began issuing a new type of coin: the Eisenhower dollar. Named for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, this silver coin was intended to replace the paper dollar bill. However, the Eisenhower dollar never gained widespread use and was eventually replaced by the Susan B. Anthony dollar in 1979.
These dollar coins are the only cupronickel dollars that have the same size as the silver dollars and are also the last coins minted with silver in them. The Eisenhower Dollars minted particularly for collectible purposes were of superior quality and were sold in envelopes and boxes to replicate high standards.
They created quite a hype at first, but afterward, they were not as frequently circulated as the modern dollar coins. The 1971 Eisenhower dollar and the 1972 Eisenhower dollar were clad coins that were minted in large quantities. The 1976 Eisenhower dollar, minted particularly for proof purposes, holds excellent value.
