Vatican Coins
As the State of Vatican City was established in 1929 according to the Lateran treaty, this treaty also provided access to the different coinage systems of the StateState. Vatican coins minted in Rome were legally circulated in Vatican, Italy, as well as San Marino. These coins were termed as "lira" or "centesimi".
In 1929, the minted Vatican coins included 5 and 10 centesimi coins made out of copper, 20 and 50 centesimi made out of a nickel, while the 5 and 10 lire were made from silver. In 1939, the composition of some coins was changed as the coins made out of copper were replaced with aluminum and bronze. And in 1940, stainless steel coins returned the nickel coins. After the war, 1,2,5 and 10 lire coins were minted that were made of aluminum.
Vatican coins are quite popular due to their connection with art and history and are fondly collected worldwide. These rare coins include 1963 Vatican 500 lira Pope Paul VI, 1954, 1956 "Dolphin" 5 lire, and many more.
