US Large Cents
US large cents also held the same worth as the small cents and were one-hundredth part of a US dollar. The large coins were first officially minted in 1793 and minted until 1857. This was when the modern-size one-cent currency, also referred to as penny, replaced the large cents. As the large cents were made out of copper, their production was greatly affected during the 1812 war.
US large cents were not just large but also heavier, containing twice the amount of copper present in the half-cent. Also, Philadelphia mint was responsible for the production of large cents. The designs of these cents changed from time to time, representing a series of events.
US large cents came in various designs, including Flowing Hair (1793-96), Draped Bust (1796-1807), Classic Head (1808-14), Coronet Head (1816-39), Braided Hair (1839-57). A new reflection of events was added to the coin with every design that made them rare and valuable.
