The Philippines have been using the "Philippine Peso" since the Spanish rule. This currency was derived from the Spanish dollar brought in by the Manilla ships of the 16th century till the 19th century. Before the independence of the Philippines, the Philippines coins struck for circulation in the country were provided by the Spanish or the US administration.

Even after the independence of the Philippines in 1946, coins were not minted until the State became a Republic in 1958. Only small silver coins were minted commemorating General Douglas MacArthur that featured General's portrait on the obverse while reverse depicted the national coat-of-arms.

Philippines coins and Philippine peso hold great importance in the history of coinage of the world. These coins can be found in various categories, including Spanish (up to 1898), US (1898-1946), Republic (1946-Now), and mixed lots. Some of these rare coins include Cuartillo ¼ real, 1936 US Philippines 1 peso, and more.
