The official currency of South Africa is known as "rand" or also South African rand. Before introducing the rand in 1961, the currency that circulated in the country was the pound. When South Africa replaced the pounds with a decimal currency, hundred cents and ten shillings were equal to the value of one rand.

South African coins are associated with great history, and the coinage system of the country consists of many phases. The first coins circulated from 1961 to 1964 featured a forward-facing effigy of Jan Van Riebeeck. From 1965 till 1990, it initially had a portrait of Van Riebeeck, and later it was replaced by State Presidents of South Africa or South African coat of arms. The coins from 1989 till the present have the name in any country's official languages.

Some rare and valuable South African coins include 1898 single 9 pounds, 1874 Burgers Pond Coarse Beard, 1902 VeldPond, and many more.
